Indian Haircare Do’s and Dont’s are essential for maintaining the beauty and health of South Asian Hair. It’s what most South Asians do on a daily basis. This is a quick guide with some tips and advice to help you refer back on the best practices for your hair and the most common mistakes too. Follow these recommendations to make sure your hair stays strong, shiny, and manageable.
Do Use Natural Oils
Incorporate natural oils like coconut oil, almond oil, and castor oil into your haircare routine because these oils nourish and strengthen hair from the roots to the tips.
Do Regular Oiling and Massaging
Regularly oiling and massaging your scalp improves blood circulation and promotes hair growth. Each time I wash my hair, I put some coconut oil in. I let it soak into my scalp for as long as I can and you will see differences in hair fall, and an increase in overall smoothness.
Do Use a Wide-Tooth Comb
Detangle your hair with a wide-tooth comb to prevent breakage and hair loss. Start from the ends and work your way up to avoid pulling on your hair. It’s better than a brush although a little more tedious!
Do Try to Opt for Natural Shampoos and Conditioners
Choose shampoos and conditioners free from harsh chemicals like sulfates and parabens. Natural ingredients help maintain the hair’s natural oils and health. The chemicals in those shampoos and products are much harsher than we know and realize. Our hair is already susceptible to environmental factors, lifestyle stresses and UV Radiation.
Don’ts for Thick Indian Hair
Don’t Wash Your Hair Too Often
Washing your hair too frequently strips it of natural oils, leading to dryness and breakage. Aim to wash your hair 2-3 times a week. If you can wash it once twice a week maximum and dry shampoo the rest that’s what I would recommend and that’s what I do. I know everyone has differences in scalp composition and some of us are just prone to our hair looking like it needs a wash. However, if you start to train your hair and you wash it less over time you will notice that you’re able to go longer in between washes. It’s a long term strategy but if we want to have hair forever, we have to put in the effort now!
Don’t Use Excessive Heat
Avoid using heat styling tools like straighteners and curling irons frequently. Heat can damage thick hair and make it brittle. Heat is the WORST! I know because I spent the last 20+ years running straighteners and blow dryers and blow drying brushes and anything you can think of trying to get my half wavy half curly hair manageable. After I fried my hair and with some life stress of the last year and a half, I realized I had very little hair left and what was left was coarse, brittle and thin. So I stopped all heat products immediately and it’s been almost two years now! I don’t regret a second, have made some hair changes and have personally seen a huge difference.
Don’t Brush Wet Hair
Wet hair is more prone to breakage. Let your hair dry naturally or use a wide-tooth comb if you need to detangle it while it’s damp. For us wavy/curly haired girlies/individuals – you’re going to want to detangle your hair for sure! But try to use a comb instead of a brush, or those curly brushes that are all over Instagram right now. I have one and use it through my hair super carefully. Another great tip – detangle your hair while you’re in the shower conditioning your hair. You’ll barely have any tangles after, saving you time and hair!
Don’t Skip Conditioning
Always condition your hair after shampooing to keep it hydrated and manageable. Deep conditioning treatments are particularly beneficial for thick hair. And again – avoid all the chemicals!
Don’t Use Too Many Products
Overloading your hair with products can weigh it down and lead to buildup. Which will eventually lead to hair breakage, which will look like your hair is thinning. So just stick to essential products like shampoo, conditioner, and occasional treatments. Just keep it simple!
Conclusion
Maintaining hair can be both a joy and a challenge. By following these Do’s and Don’t of Thick Indian Hair, you can ensure that your hair remains healthy, strong, and beautiful. Incorporating natural oils, avoiding chemicals, heat and gentle handling will keep your locks in top condition.
Remember, the key to beautiful thick hair lies in consistent and mindful care. Embrace the natural beauty of your thick hair, and let these tips guide you in achieving and maintaining your hair goals. Try to avoid the blowouts, and heat! With the right approach, your hair can be your crowning glory, reflecting its natural strength and shine.
Start integrating these practices into your routine today and if you can stay consistent, you’ll see a difference in your hair’s appearance. Here’s to celebrating the beauty of your natural hair!
