How I went from Thin Dry Hair to Thick Healthy Hair using a Coconut Oil Recipe!
In my mid-forties due to the stresses of daily life, thyroid imbalances, and hormonal changes, I was grappling with a lot of hair loss. 2022 was when my life and hair really started to unravel, but in hindsight I’m sure the pandemic and all the effects from it also contributed to my hair loss. Let’s not forget about the situationship I had let myself get in. (If you’ve been there, you know what I’ve talking about!). So I was having health issues like my thyroid imbalances, and although those evened out, I started seeing differences in my hair texture and thickness. With everything else going on in addition to work and kids, it was no wonder I was losing my hair and didn’t even like my hair anymore. But in all honestly, I wasn’t being great or consistent about haircare, vitamins or protein at this time and it was showing.
My Problems: Heat and Chemical Damage, Washing Too Often, & How Daily Life Stress Caused Thinning Hair!
Heat Styling: Using heat styling tools like blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons can severely damage your hair, leading to breakage and split ends. I had been straightening my hair for over 20 years and I don’t think I had been using an updated straightener because it was showing in my hair for sure. Today, there are better straighteners that you can use that are much safer for your hair and won’t fry it like mine did! However over time, excessive heat will weaken the hair shaft, making it brittle and prone to damage. And that’s when I noticed that dry, coarse feel. Here are some before pics!
Parabens and Chemicals-Going Chemical Free and How it Restored my Hair!
Chemical-Laden Products: Many commercial hair products contain sulfates and parabens, which strip your hair of its natural oils. These chemicals can cause dryness, irritation, and long-term damage, leaving your hair lifeless and dull. I was using any shampoo/conditioner honestly and wasn’t really checking about chemicals. If I found a shampoo without chemicals I’d totally buy it but would I look for it actively? Nope. I do now!! I don’t know if it’s solely the parabens and chemical free products and shampoo/conditioner I use, or the oiling, or the drastic decrease of heat in my hair, but I can feel the texture is better and healthier and it feels like it’s growing and that’s all I care about!
Determined to get my “old hair” back, I began making my own version of infused coconut oil. I essentially just added all the ingredients that my Indian grandmother used to add in her oil back in the villages of Surendranagar (a small village in Gujarat, India) and did exactly what she did! You’ll find all the ingredients, why I use them and the entire recipe in this article here. Please make sure you’re not allergic to any ingredients and of course follow the recipe to your own discretion!
The Results, The After Pictures and How Consistent Coconut Oil Massage Fixed my Hair Fast!
For me, coconut oil has truly transformative effects on hair health, offering deep nourishment and hydration that can rejuvenate even the most damaged strands. Because it’s so rich in fatty acids and antioxidants, it penetrates the hair shaft really well and promotes stronger, shinier hair. Personally, incorporating coconut oil into my hair care routine changed my hair in just six months. By adding the same natural ingredients that my grandmother used and maintaining some patience and consistency, I started to notice a change after about three months. Now an additional three months later, the results are becoming more noticeable. My hair fall has definitely reduced, and my hair has become more shinier, smoother, and even more lustrous. My hair became noticeably thicker, softer, and more resilient to hair fall. So in all honestly, I’m not sure if I’m growing a ton of new hair or just not losing a lot anymore, but I am seeing more thickness – whatever the reason is and hopefully you can too!
Conclusion: Before and After!
Before incorporating coconut oil into my hair care routine, my hair was thin, dry, and lacked vitality. I struggled with breakage and dullness, and nothing seemed to restore its health. However, after being consistent with the oiling process, for about six months and I’m still going, the transformation was remarkable! The nourishing properties of coconut oil smoothed and thickened my hair, making it noticeably softer and more resilient. My hair is starting to look much better and healthier now that I’m staring to use less heat as well as toning down on the everyday washes. If you’re looking for a way to rejuvenate your hair, I highly recommend giving coconut oil a try! If you have any questions or comments leave them here or find me on Instagram! @Healthyindianhair
