The Power of Coconut Oil

You’ve already been informed so far that coconut oil is a staple in Indian haircare, renowned for its deep conditioning and nourishing properties. My grandmother used coconut oil to strengthen hair, reduce protein loss, and promote a healthy scalp. But she added some nourishing ingredients to it like Amla, Vitamin E, Fenugreek, and Onion just to name a few. I started to make my own oil following her recipe which is how I revived my own hair!

How to Use: Warm the oil slightly and massage it into your scalp and hair. Leave it on for at least 3 hours or more, or overnight for a more intensive treatment, before washing it out with a gentle shampoo. The longer you can leave it in the better, but even if you can leave it for an hour, you’re still getting something!

The Benefits of Amla Oil (Gooseberry)

Amla oil is derived from the Indian gooseberry and is another favorite in Indian haircare. Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, amla oil helps prevent hair loss, stimulate hair growth, and improve hair texture.

How to Use: Apply amla oil to your scalp and hair, focusing on the roots. What I do is add it again to my coconut oil. Massage gently and leave it on for at one to two hours before washing it off.

The Magic of Bhringraj Oil

Bhringraj oil is often referred to as the “king of herbs” for hair growth and for a great reason!. It helps in reducing hair fall, promoting hair growth, and preventing premature graying. My grandmother swore by bhringraj oil for its ability to revitalize the scalp and hair. I put it in my custom made oil and although I do get my grays covered (lately I’ve been going ammonia free), I feel as if they gray has been coming back a tiny bit slower. Maybe it’s my imagination! I can tell you that there is less and less hair in the sink when I look down after I comb my hair.

How to Use: Massage bhringraj oil into your scalp and leave it on for at least 30 minutes before rinsing it out. Regular use can lead to noticeable improvements in hair health.

The Nourishment From Hibiscus Flowers

Hibiscus Flowers are another secret weapon in the arsenal of Indian haircare. It is known for its ability to prevent hair loss, condition the hair, and add shine. The flowers and leaves of the hibiscus plant are rich in vitamins and antioxidants that benefit the hair and it’s always added into our coconut oil base.

How to Use: Blend hibiscus flowers and leaves with coconut oil, heat the mixture, and let it cool. Apply this infused oil to your scalp and hair, leave it on for an hour, and then wash it off.

The Strength of Castor Oil

Castor oil is highly valued for its ability to promote hair growth, thicken hair, and prevent hair breakage. Its high ricinoleic acid content helps balance scalp pH and improve hair health. You have to be super careful with Castor Oil because it’s super sticky! You can’t just use it on your scalp or I wouldn’t. I would mix it into your coconut oil base and I wouldn’t put a lot of castor oil. I have known it to be difficult to come off even after shampooing numerous twice and yes I’ve had the experience!

How to Use: Mix very little castor oil with a lighter oil like coconut or almond oil to ease application. Massage it into your scalp and hair, leave it on for a few hours, and then wash it out thoroughly. If it’s your first time using castor oil I would use only one or two large tablespoons only because you don’t know if your hair will like it and I don’t want you to have the experience I had!
